Spotlight on Culinary Education

If your free time is spent trying to create the perfect lemon bar, you may find satisfaction baking for a living. Culinary school can give you the training you need to launch a new career, but how do you choose a program?

Culinary Schools that Offer Two- and Four-Year Degrees

University culinary arts schools generally offer two-year associate's and four-year bachelor's degrees. While most culinary arts degree programs offer some baking classes, for an education focused on baking, choose a program that specializes in baking and pastry arts.

Associate's degrees provide the foundations of baking and pastry as well as courses in menu development, professional studies, cost control, and food safety. They may also provide a real work internship, leaving you qualified for apprentice baker and pastry chef jobs. Some schools also provide professional certification (otherwise only attainable by exam).

Bachelor's degrees specializing in baking and pastry arts can accelerate your training in the most advanced techniques, equipment, and technologies. You can get deeper exposure to baking production, business, management, and leadership skills, along with the challenges of an advanced internship, preparing you for executive pastry chef jobs or running your own bakery.

Training for Getting Chef Jobs More Quickly

If you want to get to work sooner, one option is the baking and pastry diploma or certification. With an average of 60 credits as opposed to the approximately 100 required for many associate's degrees, your courses won't include general studies like mathematics or English composition. You can still get a solid education in baking and pastry fundamentals, as well as skills in communication, leadership, nutrition, cost control, and food safety.

Then there are baking and pastry intensive trainings, most of which last around three to four months. The culinary instructors in these highly concentrated programs focus specifically on baking and pastry ingredients, techniques, and production.

What about Online Culinary Degree Programs?

While there are online culinary schools offering online culinary classes in skills associated with owning or managing a baking or pastry business, most professionals recommend learning baking techniques through hands-on courses.

Having a natural talent for baking can take you far, but the right training can equip you with the knowledge and experience needed to turn your talent into a successful career.
