It may be true that pizzerias and Italian restaurants abound in Youngstown, Ohio, but there are other cultures that equally insist on having their presences known. That's why there are many different types of festivities occurring in the area, like "Simply Slavic," which celebrates the contributions of the Slavic cultures in the Mahoning Valley, of which Youngstown is a part. Just think of mouth-watering, old-world foods like potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage and kielbasa.

Culinary Arts

The city, founded by John Young in 1796, has long been an influx of different cultures. Italian has a presence that cannot be overlooked and there is now even a Summer Green Food Manufacturing plant, located in Youngstown, which is LEED certified, and produces premium products like soups, salsas and Italian pasta sauce.

Although Youngstown's culinary restaurants are diverse, they are just a small part of the restaurant industry in the state, which had more than 21,900 places to eat and drink in 2014. According to the National Restaurant Association, restaurants accounted for 10 percent of employment in Ohio, or about 557,200 jobs, in all. Individuals looking to be part of this employment trend may want to check out culinary schools in Youngstown and surrounding towns.

Famous Youngstown restaurants

While Italian takes the cake in Youngstown, there are a variety of cuisines and cultural dishes to explore. Formerly, a town that thrived on the iron and then steel industries, some of the newer opportunities for dining in Youngstown occur in and around the downtown area, which is being reinvigorated as an arts and cultural district.

The Rust Belt Brewery and the B&O Station Boxcar Lounge are located along the lower west side of the downtown water area. The B&O is a banquet hall, but also features a night market that hosts vendors selling baked goods, fresh produce and an assortment of delectable edibles. Dining establishments to try out in the city, with a population of more than 65,000, include:

  • Charlie Staples Bar-B-Que: For more than 40 years, Charlie Staples has created barbecue dishes using a special barbecue sauce. His recipe is not his own, but has been passed down and not changed for more than 100 years. While the restaurant has a New Orleans feel, it is family friendly and features plates ranging from pulled pork to slabs of ribs and Big Bertha, a stuffed baked potato.
  • Station Square Restaurant: Operating since 1986, this restaurant specializes in upscale Italian food, but also offers a wine bar. Locally-sourced, organic food is always a priority, and the restaurant has been recognized in Wine Spectator Magazine with several Awards of Excellence.
  • Bombay Curry and Grill: Natural ingredients, rich, flavored spices and robust sauces are an emphasis at this restaurant, which specializes in Indian cuisine. The Bombay Curry and Grill also offers domestic beers and wines as well as their Indian-based counterparts. No additives or preservatives are used in food preparation.
