After I was accepted at Johnson and Wales Denver I started trying to find as much information about the school that IS NOT on the website and brochures. What there is to do on campus. What the student population is like. What do most people do for fun, etc. I asked around and talked to as many people as I could. Finding them on websites such as Facebook or Myspace and asking away, becoming friends.
When I finally did come out to Denver that fall I really felt prepared. I wasn’t someone who was walking on campus completely clueless and scared of what life was going to be like. Don’t get me wrong, it was still difficult. Having to move away from home for the first time, living with someone I didn’t really even know. But, I did feel prepared for what was ahead.
A Change In Roles
Now that I will be a sophomore in the upcoming year, the tables have turned. This summer I have been contacted my several students asking me the same questions I did. Its funny how just a short amount of time at college makes you some sort of authority on life on campus. I enjoy the role reversal of going from the “student” to the “teacher”.
My Question to You
So my question is; What would you like to know? Even if you are not going to Johnson and Wales. Are there any questions that I could answer for you, or explain an experience I have had at school? Please let me know. The Dish was created for us to inform you. To help you become more familiar with what to expect at school. What do you want to hear about?

Nice post!
Hey. I was wondering if you or anyone has heard of the North Miami Campus of Johnson and Wales. I’ve been hearing plenty about Denver, but none of this.
Well, you might not know much about that but I also wanted to know how much experience you had in the kitchen before actually going to J&W.
I have never perfessionally worked in a kitchen or anything.
hello! yes, I have heard a lot about the Miami campus. A friend of mine goes there. The programs are the same basically, but from everything I have heard and seen the campus is really not very nice. Part of the campus is in an old hospital and students stay in some of the old patient rooms, also the meat cutting lab is in the old morgue! I guess all of the dorms are pretty run down and the facilities are very run down. Also, there is a lot of crime, my friend has had his car broken into 3 times in one year.
When it come to experience, I have had lots of experience in the kitchen and in professional kitchens. I have taken college courses my junior and senior year, along with helping to open and run a bakery. But, you don’t need to have experience to go to JWU. there is a good mix of students like me who had lots of experience, and students like you who dont have much.
I hope that helps! let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks alot! Wow I’m so happy i found this sitem you have no idea. But yea, i know its not in a good area and I’m wondering how much of a difference that should make and if i should look into the other Johnson and Wales schools just incase. I would love to go to New York but its WAY out of my price range. Whats your opinion on the schools in New York ( ICE, CIA, FCI ) do you think johnson and wales is at the same level as them? It’s really cool that you helped to open a bakery, my dream is to open one myself one day..which brings me to something else- does j&w have the right buisness classes for that? Woah sorry I have a lot of questions :/
thanks again.
I don’t know much about ICE but I did look at CIA and FCI. Both schools have a good program but the only downside is that is all you get there, is a good culinary program. I hope I don’t sound like I’m just some rep for JWU but I really honestly feel this way; JWU is the only school that offers a Associates Degree in Culinary Arts. and after that you can take the Food Service Management Bachelors, which will give you some REALLY great classes on running a business, how to open it, and how to keep it open. Looking at those other schools, they really didn’t offer the same type of program.
In terms if JWU is as good as those schools for their programs, they are just the same if not better. When it comes to the baking degree, its actually known as a better program than CIA and FCI! JWU is not cheap, but they really work hard on getting you scholarships. My first year I had over half of my tuition paid for by the school. When it comes to the location of the school, my friend and other people I know from JWU miami say that they wish they could have gone to another campus. I guess in terms of extra curricular activities they are lacking, and that the labs are really lacking in good equipment which makes learning harder.
Its really a personal choice in which campus, but I LOVE denvers campus! and the people are extremely nice. From what I have learned over the past year, you are just another number at the miami and providence campuses, but at denver everyone knows you personally and really cares about you.
Hope that helps! let me know if you want to know anything else!

Thanks alot, you have no idea. I always thought..” if only i had someone to actually ask questions like this too” and YAY :]
but i’ll def. let you know if i have anything else to ask.
thanks again!
OH got one…
Alright, so I’m pretty sure If i applied to the J&W in Miami, it’s the same for Denver…i hope.
What can I do to help better my chanced of actually making it in, im so nervous that i wont… i dont know what i would do if that were to happen. also.. i looked up the housing for the one in Denver and it didnt give any prices, can you give an estimation?
please and thanks.
When it comes to getting into the school, its actually pretty easy. Just be honest, and like with any college really express what sort of extras you did in highschool, like clubs or volunteering.
As for housing, check out this link for ALL of the tuition and fees information http://www.jwu.edu/sfs/tuition.htm
I stayed in Presidents Hall my first year, which is premium housing. For what you get it really does make a difference in the price, you get a MUCH nicer dorm, air conditioning, carpeting, a bigger room, and some other perks. But pretty much all the rooms are nice there.
Hopefully I will see you in the future on campus! if you come sometime soon for a visit let me know, I will give you the “insiders” tour!
