Pastry Passion: Sweet Beginnings
My name is Kellyn Nabozny, and my passion is baking and pastry arts. Growing up, I spent time a lot of time experimenting in the kitchen, and I always knew that I wanted to be a chef.During my freshman year of high school, I took cake decorating and cake art classes at Grand Rapids Community College. After a year of making cakes and then selling them to cover the cost of ingredients, I started my own business, Kellyn Jeanne Cakes.
Whipping Up Experience at Cake Nouveau
I spent the year following high school helping to open Cake Nouveau bakery in Ann Arbor, MI, which turned out to be a great way to gain all kinds of experience. I was included in the entire process of opening a small business, from meeting with the landlord and the architects, to painting the walls and picking out the dishware. When the bakery finally opened, I was the assistant pastry chef and in charge of creating all of the cupcakes, cookies, and cakes to be baked and prepared for sale (I was also the manager, saleswoman, and barista!).While at Cake Nouveau, I assisted with two Food Network Challenges: Detroit Jazz Festival and Award Cakes Challenge. Meeting and talking with several different TV personalities and top chefs around the country made helping with a nationally televised program that much more exciting.
Making it Official: Pastry Training at Johnson & Wales
I'm currently a student at Johnson and Wales University in Denver, CO. Even though I am a baking and pastry major, I still love to spend my free time baking and creating new dishes. When I complete my coursework at Johnson and Wales, I will have an associate's degree in Baking and Pastry Arts and a bachelor's degree in Food Service Management. After college I plan to expand Kellyn Jeanne Cakes and open a bakery specializing in pastries and artisan chocolates.
