Federal Grants: Free Aid for Culinary Students

The most common federal grants are Pell Grants, which are paid to qualifying students through their school. Approximately 5,400 institutions participate in the Pell Grant program, so students seeking to take advantage of Pell Grants have a wide range of choices.

Pell Grants provide varying amounts of financial aid based on criteria such as:
  • Expected family contribution to education costs

You are automatically considered for a Pell Grant when you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) either online or on paper. Most states and some private organizations also award money based on information obtained from the FAFSA.

Special Culinary Grants

In addition to federal grants, private organizations also provide grants to help people pay for culinary school. Examples include:

Chefs and other culinary professionals often fund many of the grants targeted specifically to helping students pay for culinary school, which represents successful people giving back to the profession. Criteria for private culinary grants vary, but usually include some combination of financial need, academic standing, references, and of course, attendance at a qualifying culinary institution.
