Do you need financial aid to pay for culinary school? You have several options from which to choose. Like many students, you may have to piece together your financial aid package from multiple sources. Criteria for Winning Culinary Scholarships

How do you win a scholarship to help pay for culinary school? Culinary scholarships are awarded based on academic merit or financial need, or both. Criteria vary from one scholarship to the next, but here is a sampling of some of the requirements:

• Academic merit. Many organizations look at scholarships as an investment in the future, and students who have demonstrated that they can succeed in school represent the best chance for a return on that investment.
• Community involvement. Any sort of charitable activity can be a plus, though getting involved in the fund-raising activities of a culinary scholarship sponsor may give you a leg up.
• Essay. If an essay is required as part of the application process, use it as an opportunity to express your commitment to a culinary career.
• Relevant specialty. Some scholarships are targeted toward culinary specialties, such as pastry chefs. If you have a specialty in mind, see if there is a scholarship opportunity to match.
• Commitment to culinary schooling. Some scholarships require that you have been enrolled at a culinary school for some time--often six to twelve months.
