Hello ,

When Dalyn Miller and Larry Donovan proposed the idea for their book The Daily Cocktail, 365 Intoxicating Drinks and the Outrageous Events that Inspired Them, the publisher at Fair Winds Press announced that they would be perfect authors for the book, not because they were professional bartenders, because they were professional drinkers!

October 2:

Congested highways, potholes, high gas prices - we can thank Henry Ford for all of these things. Well, sort of, because on this date in 1908, Ford started selling the first successful mass-market car, the Model T.

For the better part of the next two decades, 15 million cars with the Model T engine were sold, making Ford's company the industry leader. Because of Ford's innovative approach - using mass production - he became known the world over.

Almost as famous is the drink listed here! Try the Sidecar and toast Mr. Ford, but not while driving your Ford.

October 25:

By October 25, 1944, at the culmination of the battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, the Allied Forces had experienced a frightening new tactic employed by the Japanese forces. The kamikaze pilots, who flew suicide missions with airplanes loaded with explosives into the decks of Allied ships, were definitely unexpected.

The Japanese military never had a problem in recruiting volunteers for kamikaze missions; in fact, there were three times as many volunteers as there were aircraft. Even more surprisingly, the average kamikaze pilot was a 20-something studying at a university. Their motives in volunteering varied from patriotism to a desire to bring honor to their families, or simply to prove themselves personally. Maybe they should have considered taking up the cell. Just a thought...

November 2:

On this date in 1947, the largest and widest airplane ever built - with a wingspan of 319 feet, 11 inches - made its only flight. Its pilot, owner, and designer, Howard Hughes, flew the huge wooden plane over Long Beach Harbor, California, at an altitude of 70 feet. The flight lasted just one minute. Hughes named the plane "Hercules", but it was later renamed the "Spruce Goose".

Largest plane? Made out of wood? Only one minute in the air? We're going to file this one in the category of: People with too Much Time and Money on Their Hands.
