INSPIRED CHEFS STIR IT UP AT THE 24th ANNUAL SANTA CRUZ CLAM CHOWDER COOK OFF AND FESTIVAL

SANTA CRUZ, CA –The popular and zany Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook Off and Festival returns to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on February 25th, 2006, in the annual battle for the coveted “Best Clam Chowder” title.

More than fifty chefs and their teams will compete in the Beach Boardwalk’s Clam Chowder Cook Off, with awards for Best Manhattan and Best Boston Clam Chowders; as well as awards for Best Restaurant, Best Individual, Best Corporate/Media, People’s Choice, and Most Tasted Clam Chowders. Prizes include cash, and free airline tickets from Continental Airlines.

Much more than just a culinary competition, cooking teams compete wearing wacky costumes in a bid for the Most Original Team award. Past contestants have included mermaids, scuba divers, and giant clams. Local celebrity judges will determine the winners.

The Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook Off and Festival is an important fund-raiser for the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department, last year the event raised more than $20,000.

“The Clam Chowder Cook Off is tremendously popular with locals and visitors alike, and as a fundraiser, it is a winner,” said Dannettee Shoemaker, Director of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation. “We have enjoyed 23 years of great success with this event, and the Boardwalk’s support has helped make it possible.”

Admission to the “rain or shine” event is free. Visitors can watch chefs prepare their special chowders, and for $7.00 taste up to five different clam chowders as well as vote for the People’s Choice winner. Preparation and cooking begin at 10:00 a.m., tasting starts at 1:00 p.m., and winners are announced at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 25th, 2006. The Beach Boardwalk Arcade and Beach Boardwalk rides are open during the event.

The Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook Off and Festival entry deadline for chowder chefs is January 27th, 2006.
