Restaurants Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Cocktail

Local restaurants, Ciro's Italian Grill, laidback manor and Pico's Mex-Mex restaurant, will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Cocktail, with a special cocktail-pairing dinners on Wednesday, May 10, 2006. "Its all about flavors," stated chef/owner of laindback manor Randy Rucker when asked why he was pairing food with cocktails. "The variety of flavors in cocktails can actually provide a more interesting pairing experience than beer or wine."
"I was inspired by the original definition of a cocktail," stated chef/owner of Ciro's Italian Grill Ciro Lampasas, "when I created our cocktail pairing dinner."

The first known printing of a definition for cocktails was May 13, 1806, as recorded in "The Balance & Columbian Repository" in Hudson, New York. It read:
"Cock tail, then is a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters - it is vulgarly called a bittered sling, and is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion inasmuch as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head. It is said also, to be of great use to a democratic candidate: because a person having swallowed a glass of it, is ready to swallow any thing else."
