The Internet Chef and our "Online Solutions" page. __________________________________________ The "Internet Chef" Now that's an interesting title for a chef! But who has it? Well, if you attended the NRA Show in Chicago this past May, you'd assume that all of us were internet savvy. Many people there were calling it the ".Com" Show. The number of Internet companies present was staggering. Seems as though today's chef or restaurant owner can find everything they need right online. Fresh fish from Alaska overnight to your door, jobs online, insurance, inventory control systems, reservation programs, delivery of your food, buy, sell, bid online and on and on. Many of these business to business companies are well financed by major corporations like McDonalds, FedEx and Proctor and Gamble. The advertising budgets are huge. In last month's issue of Food Arts, I counted dozens of display ads with prominently displayed web addresses. Freshnex.com had a full page ad stating that they are a virtual farmers market online. Their web sites are graphic and content rich, easy to navigate, and they promise to save you time and money. Can this be the way of the future? A typical day for the "Internet Chef" could go like this: a. Chef shows up for work and logs onto the computer. b. He logs on to thesauce.com and checks his inventory. c. He goes to freshnex.com and orders his fish, meat and produce to arrive freshly harvested from all over the country. c. Upload creativepurchasing.com and bring in some red wine. e. Then he goes to chefrevival.com and orders new uniforms for his staff. f. The dishwasher quit last night so he goes to hcareers.com and signs up for a new one and a hostess. g. Better check with food.com to see how many dinners they are picking up for delivery tonight and then 8. click on foodline.com to check on reservations for this evening. h. All the while, he's thinking, maybe I should type in V A C A T I O N DOT C O M ! It could happen, I suppose. But I think it will be a while down the road. These powerful companies would have you believing that the computer is the most important piece of equipment in the kitchen, and to think for the past twenty years I thought it was the S T O C K P O T !
