Lidia Matticchio Bastianich is from Istria-a peninsula about 90 miles northeast of Venice that has been controlled wholly or in part by the Romans, the Franks, the Duchy of Bavaria, the patriarchs of Aquileia, Venice, Habsburg Austria, Italy and after World War II, Yugoslavia.

Lidia Motika was born of ethnic Italian parentage in Pula, a fortified seaport at the southwestern tip of the peninsula, in the immediate aftermath of World War II. As part of the Italian region of Venezia Giulia since 1920, the city had been called Pola, but along with Lidia's maiden name, Matticchio, the place name was changed by law when Istria was annexed by Yugoslavia.

8. STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE COBBLER

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE COBBLER 
Preparation time: 30 min.
Baking time: 9 min.

1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie crusts 
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (3-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar 
1/3 cup lemon juice 
2 (21-ounce) cans strawberry fruit filling 
Whipped cream (optional)

Cut pie crusts into 18 (1-inch) strips, and place on a baking sheet.
Bake at 425ºF for 8 to 9 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool.
Beat cream cheese, sugar, and lemon juice at medium speed with an electric mixer until fluffy.
Arrange one-third of pastry strips in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish; spoon 1 can fruit filling evenly on top, and spread gently with cream cheese mixture. Layer with half of remaining pastry strips and remaining can of fruit filling; top with remaining pastry strips. Chill. Serve with whipped cream, if desired. Makes 6 servings.
